Sweet Life!

Life can be wonderful at both ends of the spectrum.

This morning, my dear friend Jeanne sent me a photo of her little granddaughter, Quinny, who is two years old. In the picture, Quinny is happily holding her brand-new baby sister, Molly, who entered this world a few days ago. Two little girls just starting out, with all of life’s journey ahead of them – sweet!

I hasten to add that life can be equally sweet for someone whose journey is mostly behind him. Consider the latest adventure of my father, who is 98 years old.

My dad and I just planted his annual garden. In two separate garden plots. In the north garden, we planted seeds of all his favorites: zinnias, touch-me-nots, cosmos, 4 o’clocks, marigolds, moss-curled parsley (the tastiest kind!), snapdragons, Queen Anne’s Lace (because my dad has special memories of that flower), and morning glories (right by the trellis).

In the garden plot outside the family room, per the kitties’ hearty request and razor-sharp windowsill supervision, catnip! Also, butterfly weed and forget-me-nots.

Dad has always loved gardening and, since he was a little boy helping his grandmother, he has always had an annual garden. This year, as always, he was looking to continue that tradition. In early March, we shopped online at Burpee. The seed packets arrived promptly and have been on the shelf in the garage, just waiting until a perfect day for planting. And today, that perfect day, we planted! Isn’t it a perfect day?!?

So now, even at the advanced age of the great 98, my dear dad will still have his garden to care for and enjoy.By God’s grace, all the seeds will sprout and grow, lending beauty to the yard and my father’s summer days. The thought brings happy tears to my eyes.

Yes, life can be wonderful at both ends of the spectrum, and at all points in between!
